Good to remind us about how we might casually overlook disability in our language and actions.

“Ableist” is a triggering word for many people. When I worked as a geriatrician for a large corporation they promoted a step competition as part of a wellness scheme for employees. I pointed out that was ableist since many of us couldn’t exercise by walking. I was roundly criticized by insecure people who should have known better. At the same place one of the doctors suggested a “Walk With a Doc” program for patients. It involved taking patients for walks. At a clinicians meeting I suggested that since many of our patients and some of our clinicians would not be physically able to participate, it would be ableist to robustly promote the program. I was nearly run out of the conference room.
